Remembering Caroline

PoemAlley members and friends are invited to read a poem or share a memory in tribute to Caroline Holme, a beloved and involved member of the Curley's Tuesday night community in Stamford and the Hudson Valley Writers Center in New York. Caroline passed away this past weekend.

A regular member of PoemAlley, Caroline was known both for her generous feedback on others' work as she was for her own pieces submitted to the group, which were prized by Jennifer Franklin, her instructor at the Hudson Valley Writing Center, for their blending of the "hyperbole of the metaphysical (with) the passionate interiority of the confessional".

Below is a portion of a moving letter, courtesy of Bill Buschel, from Caroline's brother, John, to Jennifer Franklin bespeaking Caroline's inspiring devotion to her favorite form of writing:

As you know, Caroline loved to write poetry. She was thoughtful, courageous and assiduous in her craft. Your skillful guidance helped her fulfill a deep desire to express herself honestly to her readers, and receive their understanding and acceptance in return. Caroline was so grateful for the guidance and understanding you offered her, and mentioned to me in several conversations how much she appreciated your gifted teaching."

Caroline also studied with Elaine Sexton at the Sarah Lawrence Writers' Institute. Her family invites friends, fellow writers and classmates to attend either or both of the following gatherings:

Learning To Fly When Time Has Wings

In a first-time collaboration, Franklin Street Works and PoemAlley will present tomorrow evening "Nine Works Of Art, A Dozen Poets, A Dozen Poems", a cross-disciplinary presentation where poets from Curley's will offer interpretations of pieces comprising the non-profit contemporary art space's current exhibit, These Transitional Spaces.
 Rainbow Painter, Dana Hoey

Curated by Seth Kelly, Spaces features compelling pieces employing photography, painting, free-standing sculpture, audio and video-projected construction to represent particular collective and subjective ideas of time and space, while simultaneously suggesting the impossibility of fully capturing such fleeting experiences.
"Untitled",  Adam Putnam
Matthew Buckierin, Dana Hoey, Adam Putnam, Karsten Krejcarek and Aura Rosenberg are among the nine artists contributing to the program, which began June 30 and will conclude August 26. For an advance peek of this and upcoming shows--as well as the elegant environment housing them, go to www.franklinstreetworks.org.

PoemAlley Reads @ Edgehill Retirement Community

PoemAlley founding member Eva-Maria Palevich invites everyone to attend a special reading this Friday at the Edgehill Senior Community on Palmer's Hill, located on the Stamford border with Greenwich. A free-form presentation, it is hoped this event, given the strong youth-orientation of our culture, will serve as a reminder of what we owe one another as a society, across generations and across ranges of experience.

In addition to Eva-Maria, attending readers will include Ralph Nazareth, Robin Kurtz, Eddie Wright, Bill Buschel, Caroline Holme and many others. Besides her regular output of gentle, insightful pieces, bespeaking an engaging combination of wisdom and wonder, Eva-Maria is also active with the PoemAlley Advisory Committee, of which this Friday's program is her latest Committee project. Raised in West Berlin, Eva-Maria has a degree in Graphics and Design from the Lette-Verein photographic school. Check out her poetry on this blog's very first posting from 2009 here and some literary feedback regarding a discussion on T.S. Eliot's Four Quartets here.
